The Prevalence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Among the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) Undergraduate Students in UNIMAS and Its Association with Computer Usage

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most common type of nerve entrapment and it due to compression median which passes through carpal tunnel in wrist. Previous research had found that development CTS related prolonged use repetitive movement wrist such as typing. Thus, this conducted determine prevalence among Faculty Computer Science Information Technology (FCSIT) undergraduate students UNIMAS its association with computer usage. To achieve objective, a quantitative cross-sectional study was assess FCSIT students. The data collected by distributing self-administrated questionnaire online platforms. contained 4 main sections, consist respondent demographic information, respondent’s usage knowledge on ergonomics, Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) Boston questionnaire. were analysed using SPSS statistical software version 21. According results, total 338 responses from mean age 22.04 collected; 59.5% respondents females 40.5% males. Among respondents, about 90.8% healthy no pre-existing medical condition while only 3.8% them diagnosed prior study. Next, average ergonomics (28.4%). PRWE result, minimal pain (44.1%). for BCTQ severity score showed symptoms (42%) function score, up 60.7% did not show symptoms. Other findings our there relation between either terms daily duration use, years or ergonomics. conclude, correlation risk developing CTS.
